Introductory Script

I’ve interviewed hundreds of people. Here are some tips that might help you.

Thank you so much for doing this interview with me.  I want to know more about our family and our heritage, and I want your grandkids to know more about you and our heritage.  I know a lot about you, but I am sure there are things that we’ve never talked about, and I’d love to get to know you better.

We’re going to cover some things today, but there is no way that we can cover your entire life in just one session.  We’ll go for about 30 to 45 minutes today, and then will keep doing this.

I’m using an outline that was prepared by an Asian-American lawyer and journalist who has done similar interviews with his own family, but the outline is just a starting point.  I may ask you for more details about a certain topic, and I want you to tell me if there are things that you’d like to share.

If there’s any question that you don’t want to answer or any topic that you don’t want to talk about, just say so or shake your head, and we’ll move on.

I don’t expect you to remember everything and I just want to hear your best recollection.  This is not a memory test!  Also, people often remember things better a few days later, once their recollection is refreshed – it’s OK to add to or change your answers later.

I’d like to record this interview and I might share what we talk about with the rest of the family (and on social media), but please tell me if there are things that you want to be kept private.

Do you have any questions before we start?
